Message from the President

Rieck.jpeg

The world is a very different place from what it was just a few months ago. Less than three months ago, I was on the slopes in Colorado at the Annual Winter Meeting with FACES. Since then, we have all experienced the impacts of COVID-19 and its wide-reaching affects.

I first want to thank all the individuals who have continued to treat patients through this pandemic and who are risking their lives for the good of the community. There are no words to express my gratitude for your sacrifice. Secondly, I want to acknowledge those of you who have been unable to work due to COVID-19, and upon whom others rely for their livelihood. As the country gradually begins to reopen, I encourage you to stay optimistic, and I send my sincere hopes that you and your loved ones are safe.

The College continues to look towards the future and make plans for when we’ll be able to meet in person again. As we make these plans, the safety and well-being of our community is clearly our number one priority. We continue to monitor the recommendations of lawmakers and healthcare experts in making decisions for the College.

Although ‘business as usual’ seems to change by the day,  we are working hard to continue to provide the same amount of continuing education with as little interruption to our planned annual program as possible. ACOMS leadership and staff have been able to navigate the myriad of legal documents and contracts in place with hotels and other vendors associated with our meetings. We were able to rapidly and  successfully transform our Best Practices Boot Camp to a live online event and had a record number of participants. Our online Learning Center contains a wealth of CDE-bearing educational activities, including 23 hours of Clinical Reviews, four episodes of the OralMaxFax Podcast, and six modules of the Comprehensive Review Series in Facial Cosmetic Surgery, with more scheduled to follow. Our Virtual Master Class in Orthognathic Surgery is also still available for viewing. All of these activities are offered free to our members.

We had an amazing Annual Meeting planned for early June with our colleagues from ALACIBU.  This has been under careful monitoring for months in the setting of COVID-19.  Sadly, we were forced to cancel this meeting in order to ensure the safety of our membership and attendees.  Fellowship amongst OMS is a core value of ACOMS, and we feel very strongly about the social and personal interaction that the Annual Meeting has traditionally fostered. I look back fondly to the last time that we met at the Diplomat in 2004 and look forward to the day that we will be able to meet in person once again.

Now more than ever, we are relying on technology to continue operations and provide the resources necessary to help you sustain the level of excellence we all strive for in our practices. Daily life and business will not be the same after this, but we are confident that ACOMS will evolve and adapt to support our members community. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions, comment, concerns, or suggestions. We are here for you.  Be safe!

Best Regards,

Kevin L. Rieck, DDS, MD, FACS
